Committee of Inquiry into Hunting With Dogs

27th. April 2000

THE THURLOW HUNT

Further to my earlier submission dated 11th February, there has since been a development which could have serious environmental consequences. The new European Union rules on small incinerators could mean that we would no longer be allowed to use the incinerator we have at the hunt kennels for disposing of the inedible parts of the fallen stock we collect from our local farmers.

Before we installed the incinerator we relied on the only local renderer to remove this, but their service proved totally unreliable as well as being prohibitively expensive. We could not return to them. If we cannot use our incinerator we would have to stop collecting any fallen stock, which would leave our farmers with no alternative but to bury any casualties on the premises, as there are no knackers left in business in this area.

l'he loss of the free collecting service we provide would be a serious blow to our farmers who are already in dire straits, and the potential effect on the environment and public health a considerable cause for concern.

Yours faithfully

Edmund Vestey
