Dear Sir,
Inquiry into Hunting with Dogs
As organiser of a major regional agricultural show and a smaller autumn event, both of which feature significant areas dedicated to more general countryside issues, we consider that a ban on hunting with dogs would have a serious detrimental affect in a number of areas.
We should not wish to claim that such a ban would directly influence the viability of events, but there is no doubt that the absence of competitive classes for hounds, lurchers and terriers, or their availability for demonstrations, shows and displays, would profoundly affect visitor levels.
Additionally, the content of countryside attractions would be markedly reduced given the fundamental role hunting dogs play in a number of rural pastimes and activities.
It is very noticeable that shows and demonstrations by hunting dogs attract a large and varied audience. And these are not 'captive' crowds drawn by a previous or subsequent attraction, but made up of individuals and families interested in and enthusiastic about the specific display.
Our Autumn Show has exceptionally large sections given over to lurchers and terriers and would, quite frankly, have large gaps in its itinerary were these sections no longer possible. Worthy of note is the fact that this October event is significantly family-focussed and its increasing success doubtless reflects the growing interest in all its activities.
By way of being helpful I enclose details of:
i) East of England Show ring programme and countryside arena events for 1999 (We are still in the planning mode for 2000).
ii) 1999 Autumn Show leaflet indicating the variety of animal and bird attractions.
Yours faithfully,
T. Gibson OBE
Chief Executive
