Dear Lord Burns,

HUNTING WITH DOGS ENQUIRY

Burghley Horse Trials has, since its establishment in 1961, had very close links with fox hunting and has largely drawn on the field sports supporters for the greater number of its voluntary helpers, officials and supporters.

The lessons, learned by both horse and rider whilst out hunting, are highly prized and have enabled British event riders and horses to compete very successfully at all levels through Pony Club and up to international standard. The experience gained crossing hunting country at varying speeds and with the great diversity of Britain's differing terrain, ditches, fences, hedges, walls and soil conditions is of great importance and this privilege is only available because most farmers and landowners allow hunts to cross their farms and woodlands.

The viability of this event would be affected if hunting were to be banned because many of our trade stands depend upon field sports and the sporting community for support. Many of our helpers, as mentioned before, come from neighbouring hunting countries, and freely give of their time and experience under their individual hunt name. Our sponsors value the connection between the sport of eventing and other country pursuits because some of their sales go to our visitors who keep horses and dogs for field sports work.

The main attraction on the final day of the horse trials is the show jumping phase held in the main ring. The second most welcomed attraction on that same day is the annual parade of hounds which is always greatly appreciated buy the attending crowd.

The management of the cross country phase of this horse trials is made easier knowing that the volunteers have practical experience of riding and handling horses in testing circumstances as can be experienced in the hunting field.

The Committee of the Burghley Horse Trials are most grateful for the privilege of the invitation to provide this submission to your Hunting with Dogs Enquiry.

Yours sincerely
